Category standardization

Category standardization

I was hoping we could set a policy on how to categorize certain pages. Namely I'm talking about company, series, and system pages. I've seen a lot of inconsistency in how they are categorized, for example some have date categories, some have system categories, etc. If this has already been hammered out, then I guess it should just be documented somewhere, like on their respective template pages and in the Guide.

I think cases could be made for most of the categories, but hopefully we can figure out what we need/want out of these. When looking at a date category do we want to see systems created in that year? Or the beginning of a series? If you're looking at the Nintendo page, do you want to see Mario and Zelda subcategories as well as all the individual games made by Nintendo?

The other category I'm wondering about is for images for a series. If we have a Jak and Daxter logo, and a couple pictures of the main characters from the series, how do we categorize the image category? If I put [[Category:Jak and Daxter images]] on each image, should the image category get [[Category:Guide-specific images]] or maybe [[Category:Jack and Daxter]]? Since it's kind of the opposite of "Guide-specific," I don't know if that's the best place for them, though I think it comes closest.

Thanks.

Company categories:
  • Date founded
  • Parent company

Series categories: anything in the infobox. What should be in the infobox, however, is another matter; one to which I haven't yet applied much thought.

System categories:
  • Manufacturer
  • Release date

Put them in guide-specific images, since they're specific to a number of guides. We do not want images polluting the series categories.

I think naj was considering a series-specific images category for those images that it makes sense to use for multiple games within a series.

Series specific almost sounds like an oxymoron to me (we switched from game-specific to guide-specific). Our definition of "series" is also very vague. Najzere especially knows of the difficulty defining series when it comes to Pets vs. Dogz vs. Hamsterz.

For those types of images, I'd like to say put every applicable game category...but that might get excessive. Beyond that, I don't really have much opinion on image categorization. Except for being able to search for all images used within a guide, I don't really see a point.

I think the main point would be to make it easy to find images that can be reused between guides in the same series, but then anyone that really cared would probably check the categories for the other games in the series (especially the first game or the one with the most content).

I don't think searching for images is a problem (no one searches for them, you find them in the guide). If you end up using an image in two guides, just add an additional category to the image.
What say you?
